The unoffical UK Online FAQ

If you need to configure a Router manually (or check the settings) the values you require are:

VPI = 0
VCI = 38
Mode = Multimode (or g.dmt)
QoS = UBR
PPPoA with VC MUX (or VC Based / RFC 2364)
CHAP authentication

Option 4

Option 4 (off-net) usernames appear in the format of username@domain - examples:

username@dsl.ukonline.co.uk or
username@dsl3.ukonline.co.uk or
username@dsl6.ukonline.co.uk

Testing usernames as follows:
off-net diagram here (to help explain the authentication sequence)

1) Testing RAS

bt_test@startup_domain (with this you can only access www.bt.net/digitaldemo site)

2) Testing HomeGateway/Domain

bt_test_user@ (then the ISP Domain - to test what gateway you are connected to) examples are:

bt_test_user@skydsl
bt_test_user@dsl.ukonline.co.uk
bt_test_user@dsl6.ukonline.co.uk
bt_test_user@dsl3.easynet.co.uk
bt_test_user@the_losing_isp_when_migrating

If you are connected to a different gateway than expected this is known as an SSB (Service Selection Barring) fault

3) Testing ISP authentication

- log -p
- radauth [username] [password]
- check IRIS
- can we connect with Test Team off-net connection
(requires a router with which we can type user/pass)

Speed Testing

Run a quick speed test using www.btopenworld.com/speedtest - a download transfer Rate test
The result will be in KBps (KiloBytes per second) - times this by 8 to get Kbps (KiloBits) throughput

use www.speedtester.bt.com to show Sync, IP Profile and actual throughput speeds
This will require username (MAC address) and domain (skydsl) to run.
An example on how to run the BT Speed Tester can be found at Plusnet

For test 2 and test 3 on www.speedtester.bt.com you use bt_test_user@domain (bt_test_user@skydsl) and speedtest@speedtest_domain logins
An example of this can be found at Zen Support

Line Capability Estimator

Option 2

LLU users will have a username in the format of:
username@exchangecode.ls.ukonline.co.uk

When checking the line quality - check for

Attenuation (dB) up/down = 8.5 / 17.0
Noise Margin (dB) up/down = 31.0 / 31.0
CRC/FEC errors
Line Length

Line Attenuation should be as low as possible and
SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) should be as high as possible.

The noise margin will fall as faster speeds are placed on the line.

The directions on finding attenuation/noise margin on the Actiontec router appear to be missing, so I have included the information here.

  1. Telnet 192.168.0.1 or whatever you have changed it to
  2. User ID and password to log in are both admin by default
  3. Type the following command to show the stats: cat /proc/avalanche/avsar_modem_stats
You should see something like

# cat avsar_modem_stats

Voyager 105 USB Modem

BT Voyager 105 web site for software, user guides and technical support.

AOL use PPPoE, while most other ISP's including UK Online will use PPPoA.
You may need to download a "clean" version the voyager software if you have a modified version from another ISP.

BT Voyager Booster information

The Voyager 105 may not work with 10.4 'Tiger' and above, but will work fine for Apple Mac OS 9.x, 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3 systems OK.

The Voyager is not currently compatible with Windows XP 64-bit

(Registry changes at your own risk - install drivers again after running this tool)

You may see the error message can't get registry value, key is equal to software/globespanvirata/adsl and value is equal to driver type which I have found to be caused by anti-virus software (attempting to protect user form malicious file changes) thus preventing the removal or the install/re-installation of the Voyager. Best to disable the anti-virus, run the Dr105 utility and then re-install software.

Sockets and stuff

Check for the main Master socket by looking for the NTE5 Test Socket. You can also connect modem/router to this to bypass extensions etc. You might also want to check for Ring Wire.

How to set-up/improve wireless security and performance

  • Disable the SSID Broadcast and change the SSID to something other than the default, but take care to use something that can't be guessed
  • Use Channels 1, 6 and 11 which don't overlap
  • Enable WPA encryption
  • Limit access to the Router by only allowing the MAC addresses of the wireless equipment that you use
  • Switch off DHCP and use static addressing with a small subnet (252 or 248) - also use a different range than would be expected like 192.168.18.x
  • Change the default user/pass of the router (this is often admin/admin)
  • Also specify only the 802.11b or 802.11g rather than 'mixed' if practical to do so
